A Palestinian protestor throws stones at Israeli soldiers in the West Bank town of Hebron Monday, May 15, 2000. In the worst violence in four years, Israeli troops and Palestinian police engaged in fierce gun battles Monday, as protests swept across the West bank and Gaza Strip marking "Al Naqba", the Arabic word for catastrophe used to describe Israel's founding in 1948, and demanding the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails. The violence came despite a decision Monday, by theIsraeli Cabinet to transfer three West Bank villages near Jerusalem to Palestinian control in a goodwill gesture
